Negeri Sembilan













Introduction

Negeri Sembilan translated literally means "Nine States". The State is so named because it comprises a federation of nine states. Located in the central region of Peninsular Malaysia, is bordered in the north by Selangor, in the east by Pahang and in the south by Melaka and Johor. Covering a total area of 6,645 sq km, the land comprises of picturesque valleys and plains amidst undulating hills and mountains.

Negeri Sembilan is also known for its Minangkabau-styled architecture, reflecting the influence of the State's first inhabitants from Sumatra.

Getting there

By Bus :
Express buses travel to and from Port Dickson to major towns and cities like KL, Seremban, Ipoh, Melaka and Lumut. The bus and taxi stations are next to each other in the centre of town. From Port Dickson town, local buses will take you to wherever you like along the beach.

Bus Transportation :
Terminal One Bus Station in Seremban, the main bus hub in the state, offers daily express bus services to all the major towns and cities in Peninsula Malaysia and Singapore. At Terminal One, one can also board stage buses to Port Dickson, Tampin, Kuala Pilah, Bahau and other towns in the state.

Taxis :
Taxis are also easily available at the Seremban Taxi Station in Jalan Tuanku Munawir. At reasonable fixed prices, one can take a taxi to all the major towns in Negeri Sembilan as well as to Kuala Lumpur, Melaka and Johor Bahru.

By Train :
Seremban is well connected to Kuala Lumpur by a fast comfortable commuter train service every half an hour. The state capital is also accessible through the main railway network in West Malaysia connecting all the states capitals and major towns.

TRADITIONAL MUSIC
Enjoy the sounds of the state's traditional musical performances. The Caklempong or Taklempong is an ensemble of gong-like instruments or bonang. Its music usually accompanies traditional dances, wedding ceremonies and cultural events.

Sri Menanti Royal Museum
This former palace is a classic showcase of Minangkabau architecture and design. This uniquely constructed palace became a tourist attraction after it was turned into a Royal Museum in 1992. The wooden structure is an architectural wonder as no screws or nails were used in its construction. It is a repository of the regalia of the Negeri Sembilan royal family, with exhibits such as costumes, ceremonial weaponry, bed chambers and documents on the royal lineage.

Port Dickson
Port Dickson or PD situated about 32 km west of Seremban, is a very famous seaside resort of Malaysia. Most of the seaside resorts have water sports activities, beach volleyball or just a place to relax by the beach. Its sunny beaches, lined by tall coconut trees and shady casuarinas, are perfect for a short beach holiday.

State Mosque
This mosque was built with nine pillars to symbolise the nine districts in Negeri Sembilan. Described as one of the more attractive modern mosques in the country, it offers a scenic view of the Seremban Lake and the gardens surrounding it.

Muzium Negeri
The museum is built in the style of a Minangkabau Palace and has some worn craft and historical exhibits. Located within the grounds of the Cultural Handicraft Complex, the museum is and old wooden palace which has been reconstructed. On display are artefacts like weapons, brass and a tableau portraying a grand royal wedding. It has a gasing or top spinning pavilion and a small tourist information office.

LUKUT MUSEUM
Lukut, a historical town situated north of Port Dickson, is the site of the Lukut Museum and fort. The museum gives an insight into Lukut's golden era as the capital of the tin trade. Visitors can discover artefacts from the Nassau shipwreck, the famous Dutch East Indiaman battleship that belongs to EIC, which sank during the Battle of Cape Rachado (Tanjung Tuan) on August 18, 1606. This is the battle fought between Dutch and Portuguese to takeover Melaka. Exhibits include among others coins, Spain shillings, compass ring, pewter spoon, musket of varying sizes and Zelfpotten (North European kind of ceramic) used for medicinal purposes.

Lukut Fort
A historical building built by Raja Jumaat bin Raja Jaafar in 1847 on Bukit Gajah Mati. The fort was used to protect its occupants from notorious secret societies that preyed on miners during the height of Negeri Sembilan's tin-mining industry. The fort is 607 feet long by 505 feet wide and had a ditch of 15 feet, which was defended by large muzzle loading guns.

Cultural Handicraft Complex
The Complex, which has been modelled like a traditional Minangkabau dwelling, is located on a four-hectare site along Jalan Labu. Various examples of the state's handicraft and historical artefacts are on display in this Complex which preserves Negeri Sembilan's rich cultural traditions
House Of Pendita Za'aba
Also known as Teratak Za'ba, this historic house chronicles the life and times of Za'ba or Tan Sri Zainal Abidin Bin Ahmad, an icon of Malay literature and thinking, who made many contributions in the economic, political and social fields. He was recognised as Pendita Za'ba or learned man.
Located in Kg. Bukit Kerdas, about 2 km from Batu Kikir en route to Bahau, this house is a well-preserved example of traditional Negeri Sembilan architecture, with its raised stilts and long up-ended roofs.

Nilai
Nilai, in the northern part of the state, has become an important industrial area due to its proximity to the new Kuala Lumpur International Airport in nearby Sepang district in Selangor.

Jelita Ostrich Farm
Feed ostriches and other animals such as turkeys, rabbits and horses in this delightful farm in Seremban. Visitors will also be briefed on ostrich farming, get to visit the breeding pens and maybe even ride the biggest bird in the world. The souvenir stop in the PD Ostrich Farm offers a range of rare and exotic products like Ostrich leather wallets and handbags, Ostrich feather dusters and a cafe serving healthy and delicious food items made from Ostrich meat like burgers and dried meat.
Lake Gardens
Well landscaped with two lakes situated among the greenery, the park offers cool respite from the heat. Cultural shows are held on a floating stage on one of the lakes. Overlooking the Lake Gardens is the State Mosque, with its nine pillars symbolizing the nine districts of the State. Stroll to the nearby State Library to enjoy its colonial architectural splendour.

Ulu Bendol Recreational Park
The Ulu Bendul Recreational Park located 16 km from Seremban on the Kuala Pilah Sri Menanti route. The park is one of six recreational parks in Negeri Sembilan developed for eco-tourism. There is a stream running through the park which offers a refreshing dip and several trails suitable for jungle trekking.
Lata Kijang Waterfalls
This is one of the highest single drop waterfalls in Malaysia. Situated deep in the jungle in the district of Jelebu, it is accessible by four-wheel drive. The two-hour trip through rugged terrain, traversing Orang Asli or aboriginal settlements and a plethora of wild plants, rewards visitors with the breathtaking sight of this waterfall.
